Pet Jack Russell dog is savaged by bull terrier in Pottery Lane, Heworth

THE owner of a Jack Russell dog has told how she watched in horror as her pet was savaged by a bull terrier on the loose in her garden.

Anne Rennison said the bull terrier, which was with a group of children and not on lead, came into the garden of her home in Pottery Lane, Heworth, on Tuesday afternoon, before grabbing her ten-year-old Jack Russell terrier by the neck and “throwing him around” for 15 minutes.

The attacking dog, believed by police to be an English bull terrier cross, was eventually brought under control by its owner and has since been destroyed. The Jack Russell, called Radar, is currently seriously injured in a York vet’s surgery.

Mrs Rennison, 57, said: “I have never seen anything like it in my life and I don’t want to see anything like it again.

“The dog was walking along with the children and they followed it in. We couldn’t do anything – it was too dangerous and there were kids in the garden. “I called the police because I was scared it would attack them.

“My next-door neighbour was throwing things at the dog to try to get it to drop Radar, but it was no good. He’s just a Jack Russell – he didn’t have a chance.”

Radar’s ordeal ended when the bull terrier’s owner, who lived nearby, was alerted and brought the animal under control. Yesterday, Radar was still in the vets suffering bites to his back and shoulders.

A distraught Mrs Rennison said: “He tried wagging his little tail at us, but he hadn’t been able to move all day.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called to the scene at 4.10pm. The dog had been let into the garden by children and it then attacked the other dog. The animal was on the loose in the garden when we turned up and it would not let go of the other dog.”

He said police traced the owner and arranged for the dog to be put down the following day.

Nobody was arrested in connection with the incident.

We had a family Jacky Russell for 17 years and had a similar incident (although luckily for our dog not as serious) with an Alsation, I can only imagine your horror watching this happen to your beloved family pet.

I hope Radar makes a full recovery and isnt too shaken from the ordeal. The other dog shouldnt be allowed to roam free without a lead.

Get well soon Radar :-)

Our dog was attacked twice by a Great Dane, 1 year apart. Horiffic injuries both times. Magistrates let them off without even a slap on the wrist.

Hope Radar makes a full recovery.

My heart goes out to you and your family, Annie. I hope Radar makes a full and speedy recovery and can properly wag his tail at you in no time at all. Best of luck Radar (what a lovely name for a dog!) xx

Hope the dog recovers quickly from this very nasty attack.

Perhaps they should change his name though as he obviously didn't see this one coming!

I hope Radar recovers, its all very good putting the dog to sleep but why hasnt the owner been punished for his bad ownership? he will probably go out now and buy another one from some backstreet breeder (because they probably wanted a new puppy anyway) Why do owners of english bull dogs, staffys, and all these other various peni!* extension dog breeds think its fine to have them off lead with no muzzel, most staffys are quite nice people dogs i have to admit but I wouldnt and dont allow my small dog to play with them as they are capable of such damage a responsible dog owner knows that although they may love there dog if they have one of the main fighting breeds they have to respect the power and instinct they have and keep the dog safe aswell as other people's dogs and children.

I hope your dog pulls through ok. It really annoys me when people don't put their dogs on a lead in pulic places or near roads. I love my dog dearly and he is fairly well trained but I always have him on a lead, you can never predict what they will do. It's pure luck that more damage wasn't done and no one else was hurt.

At the very least the owner of the Bull terrier should have to pay all of Radars vet bills. Then they should be banned from keeping dogs if they can't take responsibility. Best wishes to Radar and family.

Anne - after asking nicely, be prepared to try a Small Claims Court action against the owner for the vet bills.

the owner of this hideous other dog should be put down
what if it had been a child it had hold of by the neck ??, eh ? these owners are thicker than these stinking boring dogs,, to be honest i would have poured a red hot kettle of water on it's head and then stabbed it with a huge bread knife repeatedly !! but then I'm an old softy ,,

Do us all a favour and put them all down. Filthy creatures."

What all dogs?
Or the stupid irresponsible owners who have no clue of how to bring up a dog!
They should be punished severely as they as stated will go and get another puppy and have the same problem again.

I have a Staffordshire Bull terrier and a Jack russell if the dogs are brought up well they are fine,

It's the owner not the dog!

There should be a large fine and a ban from owning dogs for the owner. Walking any dog in a built up area without a lead is an accident waiting to happen!

I do wish Radar a speedy recovery!

All dogs. The world would be a much cleaner place. They're so dirty I wouldn't even eat one unless I was really hungry.
