A MAN in his late teens escaped unhurt after this car crash in a North Yorkshire street.

The blue Vauxhall Corsa ended up on its side after hitting a lamppost in Smithson Court, Malton, on Thursday evening.

Graham Piercy, 53, of Smithson Court, said: "We all heard a massive bang and this lad had come round the corner, hit the lamppost and the car tipped on its side."

Mr Piercy said young drivers had been a problem in the area.

He said: "They drive from Pasture Lane down into Wentworth Street car park and they get as much speed up as they can.

"They also rev their cars up on a night, making a lot ofnoise - possibly because Smithson Court residents have been complaining about it."

But a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said there was nothing to suggest the driver in Thursday night's crash had done anything wrong. The cause of the accident was unknown.

Sgt Steve Pearse, of Malton Police said police were, however, aware of the problems in the area of Wentworth Street car park.

They had increased patrols and had issued a number of warnings to drivers and seized some vehicles.

"We need a long-term solution and are working to establish a permanent solution. There is another public meeting planned in the very near future, " he said.
