AN INQUEST has opened into the death of student Jonathan Havron, whose body was found in the River Foss in York on Tuesday.
York coroner Donald Coverdale said a post mortem examination had been conducted, and the provisional cause of death was drowning.
He said Jonathan, 18, of Huntington, had gone into town to meet a friend on Friday, February 26, and had appeared to be his usual self, but had drunk in a number of establishments.
He said: “It may be that Mr Havron was somewhat the worse for drink.”
Jonathan had not been seen after 1.35am on February 27, and police had conducted extensive searches until a fisherman fishing in the Foss Basin, below the weir at Castle Mills Bridge, noticed a body in the river on Tuesday.
It was recovered and subsequently identified as that of Jonathan.
The coroner adjourned the inquest, saying further inquiries would be conducted on his behalf, including toxicology tests.
