Pope visit hopes look to be dashed

HOPES that the Pope might come to York seem to have been dashed.

City leaders had been optimistic that Pope Benedict XVI may come to the city, as part of a planned pilgrimage visit to Britain later this year.

But City of York Council leader Andrew Waller said yesterday that the visit was now being planned as a state visit, rather than a pilgrimage.

That means the Pope will not be addressing large crowds as his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, did in 1982, when hundreds of thousands of people gathered on Knavesmire in York to see him.
