New CCTV cameras fitted in bid to make East Coas train travel safer

NEW CCTV cameras are to be fitted on trains ferrying passengers from York to London and Edinburgh as rail bosses beef up security measures.

The nationalised company East Coast will install 1,621 cameras throughout its fleet of 43 trains – about 40 for each service – as it invests £3.8 million in rolling stock.

The scheme, which is now under way and should be completed by the end of the year, will see CCTV fitted to the interiors of carriages to combat antisocial behaviour, while a number of forward-facing cameras will be placed within drivers’ cabs to monitor any incidents from their perspective.

East Coast engineering director Ian Duncan said: “This demonstrates our investment in the rolling stock and our commitment to passenger safety.

“On the very rare occasions when a minority of individuals cause problems on our trains, CCTV systems on board will help protect passengers and our staff against antisocial behaviour, assist authorities with convictions against offenders and hopefully act as a deterrent.

“The introduction of CCTV on board our trains will help reassure our customers that the train is a safe way to travel,” Mr Duncan said.

CCTV doesn't 'protect' people against anything. On the one occasion I witnessed mayhem by a gang of yobs on a train between Wakefield and Doncaster (in pre-East Coast days), the guard was well aware of what was going on but locked himself away and contented himself with berating the youths over the PA system. In any case, he made it very clear that it wasn't other passengers' safety that bothered him: he was only exercised about the fact that he suspected the hooligans hadn't bought tickets and were cheating the train operating company out of its £££. And were the British Transport Police waiting on the platform at Doncaster to come to the rescue? No. The lads piled off the train, and ran away laughing. Similarly, did the CCTV cameras on Wakefield Kirkgate station 'protect' the victim of the rape that occurred there not so long ago? No.

And if you must make your contribution to our paranoid surveillance society, East Coast, at least refrain from putting up the offensive, patronising message "Smile - you're on TV" inside every door, like one of your competitors.
