Selby police praised for rescue of 94-year-old pensioner

Selby police have been praised after freeing an elderly woman who became entangled in a wire fence.

The 94-year-old woman was reported missing from her home just before 7pm on Saturday – although police have only just released details of the call-out.

The woman, who lives in a village between Selby and Goole which police have not identified, was out in the cold wearing thin clothes.

Fearing the worst, a large-scale search of the area was launched, which included West Yorkshire Police’s helicopter.

The woman, who has been described as “vulnerable”, was eventually found at 8.20pm by two PCSOs who heard noises coming from a field near her home.

She had become entangled in a wire fence, was very cold and had serious cuts to her legs and lower body.

The PCSOs freed the woman, then they and an ambulance crew carried her to a waiting ambulance in which she was taken to Pontefract General Infirmary.

Sergeant John Suchomski, of the Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This was a team effort of the highest order. Everyone involved should be proud of their involvement, which resulted in them saving a life.”
