A LORRY driver has appeared in court accused of dangerous driving following a pile-up on a main road near York in which a man was seriously injured.

Michael Burkert, of Zum Heilbach, in Bad Berleburg, Germany, is alleged to have driven a Mercedes flatbed heavy goods vehicle into the back of a line of queuing cars at temporary traffic lights on the eastbound carriageway of the A64, near the Highwayman Café.

The incident happened at 10.50pm on Monday.

Burkert, 39, required a translator during yesterday’s preliminary hearing at York Magistrates’ Court.

He was released on conditional bail and will next appear before magistrates on April 22.
