TWO of Selby’s most prominent industrial sites are to get a new life in a massive regeneration boost for the town.
Major companies will soon be starting production on the 35-acre acre Clariant site, in Bawtry Road, and the remaining 32 acres of the former Tate & Lyle site.
Clariant, itself a chemicals producer, is to be taken over the by the multi-national Industrial Chemicals Ltd.
The Tate & Lyle site in Denison Road is to be turned over to the production of ethanol by the European company Syral. The ten acres currently used by Selby Renewable Energy Park will be unaffected. Selby MP John Grogan welcomed the investment in the industrial sites.
He said: “Since Tate & Lyle and Clariant closed their doors last year I have been kept in touch with a variety of interested parties. I am pleased that there is now the definite prospect of new investment and new jobs on both sites which are in the heart of the town. As well as being part of Selby’s industrial past, they should now be both part of its industrial future.”
Syral, which is a subsidiary of Tereos, and Industrial Chemicals Ltd have both remained tight-lipped about their plans for their respective sites. Syral, which also produces sugar, sweeteners and proteins, has submitted plans for the Tate & Lyle plant, although these are yet to be validated by Selby District Council so are not yet available to the public.
Industrial Chemicals have not yet said what they will be producing at the former Clariant site but their website says their core business is supplying water treatment chemicals, detergents and flocculants – substances which remove particles from liquids.
