River body confirmed as that of missing York teenager Jonathan Havron

THE body of missing York teenager Jonathan Havron has been found in the River Foss.

Police recovered the body this afternoon, after it was spotted by a fisherman, just below the weir at Castle Mills Bridge in the city centre.

An underwater search unit was called in and the area was cordoned off until officers in a boat were able to recover the body.

A force spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with Mr Havron's family at this very difficult time."

He said there were no suspicious circumstances, but said police were still keen to find out how Mr Havron came to be in the river.

Police had conducted a number of searches of the Foss and also the River Ouse following the 18-year-old's disappearance in the early hours of Saturday February 27, following a night out in the city centre. The Bishop Burton College student was last seen leaving the Lowther Pub in Cumberland Street.

Jonathan's mother and other members of his family had conducted a city-wide leafleting campaign in a bid to find out what had happened.
