MOTORISTS who were booked for parking on a York riverbank despite being flooded have had their tickets rescinded.

The Press reported yesterday how several drivers had been ticketed by a zealous parking attendant for leaving their vehicles on Queen’s Staith. The tickets were issued after the cars had been submerged by floodwaters from the River Ouse.

A visitor from Nottingham later posted a comment on The Press website, saying he owned one of the cars affected, having visited York to see the fantastic’ sights advertised by the council and tourist office.

The visitor said he had been advised by his hotel reception he could park on the staith between 6pm and 8pm, but had then got up in the morning to find his car under five feet of water. “Safe to say I won’t be visiting York again,” said the visitor.

City of York Council said on Monday that the attendants had been unaware the cars had been flooded when issuing the tickets, but appeals would be granted if people could provide evidence they had been flooded.

But now a spokeswoman said yesterday that the tickets had subsequently been rescinded, and the fines would not have to be paid.
