Flood-hit cars in Queen’s Staith are given parking tickets

THEY say bad luck comes in threes and for the owners of these flooded cars the old adage seems to have come true.

The cars, which were parked up on the riverbank at Queen’s Staith, in York, fell victim not only to the rapidly rising river water over the weekend, but also a zealous parking inspector.

A taxi driver called The Press to say he had seen the cars being ticketed at about 9.15am yesterday morning after the floodwater from the Ouse had subsided.

Shaun Binns, landlord of The Lowther pub which is on the opposite bank of the river on Cumberland Street, said his staff had a good view of the incident.

Mr Binns said: “Normally you get people parking on there, but they move them in time to avoid flooding, but in this case I think the river’s come up quickly and they must have got caught out. There are double yellow lines down there and I suppose you could say that if you are not allowed to park there you shouldn’t, but the inspector must have seen the cars had been flooded and to be truthful, you’d think they’d have had a bit of compassion.”

A council spokeswoman said parking attendants had been unaware that some cars had been flooded when issuing the tickets. She said that if people provided evidence that their vehicle had been submerged, they would succeed in an appeal against their ticket.

If they want evidence I would be towing it round to St Leonard's Place and park it next to the fridge.

If you break the law not only does God notice and flood your car, but he tips off CofYC as well. Omnipotent or omnipresent you decide. PS. he's waiting for a stormy day with a lightningbolt for a cyclist!

There is what looks like a single yellow line in the background of the picture: if so, they were probably legally entitled to park there at the time they did so, but not by the time the water had risen.

I own one of these cars - I visited the City of York to see the fantatsic sights that are advertised by your council and the tourist office - I was advised by the hotel reception that you can park there between 6pm - 8am - I got up in the morning to see my car under 5 ft of water - Safe to say i wont be visiting York again. Thanks for your un-sympathetic comments. My ticket is currently with the appeals department.

Bless ya, but seriously you park your car at a spot a metre for the edge of a very fast flowing river which was less than a foot from the top of its banks after a day of torrential rain.
'
Its not that i dont have any sympathy its just that you are lacking some common sense.

Though i cant really comment as i left my green bin at the bottom of the garden friday night and had to wade out saturday morning to retrieve it... gave the neighbours a chuckle!

If York traffic wardens are genuinely keen to hand out tickets to people who park on double yellow lines, I suggest an early morning stake-out of the Londis shop on Bootham would be well worth their while.

"A council spokeswoman said parking attendants had been unaware ... "

"Unaware" - oh come off it, pull the other one! Apart from anything else, slimy mud and debris everywhere is a bit of a clue. CYC sends out crews to hose it all clean again, so part of CYC is "officially" aware.

tomlinsj: I don't know which hotel you mean, but their staff are woefully ill-informed about the risk of river flooding - scorch the manager's ears a bit, this is no good for tourism.

Traffic Wardens in York, No such thing,
parking attendents / civil enforcement officers, Traffic Wardens have power to stop / move & Direct traffic and issue FPN and NIP's our lazy Parking Atendents can only give PCN
they spend more time in car parks and Res-Park than enforcing city centre parking,
needless to say you never see on in the city centre during the loading ban, !!!!
as for the car drivers that parked cars next to a river in winter that was all ready in flood !!!!
also the hotel should have told them the river could flood. or at least keep a watch on the river and warn guests,

at least it didnt get stolen, cars under 5ft of water rarely do though. i do sympathise with you as i parked my camper van there one evening and woke up in hull. mr tomlins, come back in the summer (monsoon season) but use a hotel well away from the river - but not tang hall or clifton as it will be stolen!!!!

or York POLICE just do what your Paid to do !!!! enforce the LAW !!
why are private vehicles always permitted to drive through coppergate, pavement stonebow & piccadilly with out punishment, 1000s of vehicles a day do this, and get away with it, and AND WHY CyC is the stonebow bollard dropping for any vehicle that drives up to it, !!!!!!!
it only supposed to drop for Buses taxis yet again CyC your doing a great job of been incompetent !!!!!

To be honest, i wouldn't mind getting a ticket for illegal parking, if the the lazy parking attendants were a little bit more consistent and why do they need to go round in pairs, not very efficiant is it, or are they scared of a bit of grief.
oh and stop parking your vans on double yellow lines when you go giving tickets out.

I'm curious, how could the "parking inspector" (traffic wardens in plain English) not notice the cars were under water? Did they also not notice their feet getting wet as they wrote the ticket?
.
Also The story says that "bad luck comes in threes ... seems to have come true.". So we have
1) A flooded Car
2) A parking picket
What's the third? Living in Nottingham maybe?

He came to York, his car was flooded (presumably he wasn't warned about flood risk), then some d**khead traffic warden tickets his flooded car. Now he gets 'anti-Nottingham' comments from a load of anal yorkshire puddings. And you wonder why he doesn't want to return? I wouldn't either...

Goodness - what a bitter man! Is he seriously saying this wouldn't raise the odd humorous comment in Nottingham? And is our city no longer full of splendid sights because he got a parking ticket?

i dont understand why the press let us comment on this story but not others. for example, yet another story with terry smith in thats not allowed comments! and that stupid story about an estranged husband sending his ex wife threatening texts?!?! i didnt realise you could get the press to publish stories like this and broadcats your family issues to the whole of york or i'd have got my sister to ring in about her ex and tell them she'd got a restraining order on him and the rest of his family for threatening to snatch her baby while she wasnt looking, and then we should ask the other 50% of york in similar situations to get their life stories published too! i mean, why do we really need to know that an ex couple arent getting along? thats not news!

in regards to this story, i think that its a shame a flooded car would put you off york forever. the hotel should be to blame more than anything for not mentioning it, anyone of us may have parked there not knowing what the ouse gets up to at that area when its being raining. i feel sorry for him but i think its a tad extreme to write off york. as for finding it funny, well, sometimes you have to laugh at misfortune or you'll go mad! and theres no reason comments shoiuldnt be made about nottingham and gun crime because every city has a reputation for something! yorks is a good reputation, bradfords bad etc. theres more to life than taking comments to heart its called banter!
