TWO schools in Selby district are set to get more than £200,000 for refurbishment works next year as councillors outline their spending plans.

North Yorkshire County Council has revealed where it plans to devote a £2.4 million slice of funding to school building projects during 2010/11.

Among the 21 schools which are set to benefit is St Mary’s Primary School in Baffam Lane, Selby, which is earmarked to receive £155,000 for remodelling its reception class and improving its facilities for Key Stage 1 pupils.

Meanwhile, Cawood CE Primary School is expected to get £50,000 as part of the council’s voluntary-aided schools capital programme for refurbishing a Key Stage 2 classroom and dealing with damp problems.

A report which will go before the authority’s executive next week said the school had carried out work on one of its other classrooms last year, but improvements were still needed to two more areas of the school.

State-funded schools from across North Yorkshire were invited to submit bids for a piece of the council’s Government grant for school improvements if they are to use it to concentrate on repairs, improvements and access arrangements.

Paula McLean, the council’s capital planning support office, said in the report: “Bids were invited from diocesan directors and direct from non-denominational voluntary-aided schools.

“The bids received were far in excess of £5 million.”

She said the appeals for financial help had then been assessed in order of priority, with £81,669 of the money available having to be focused on programmes carried over from 2009/10.

Other schools which are expected to benefit are Terrington Primary School (£30,000 for refurbishing toilets), St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Malton (£64,000 for playground developments), and St Robert’s Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School in Harrogate, which should receive £48,000 and £39,000 respectively for kitchen ventilation.

The release of funding for the schemes is recommended for approval when the council’s executive meets next Tuesday.
