VANDALS have targeted a York landmark.

The pranksters placed what looked like a giant cannabis joint in one hand of the impressive statue of George Leeman, which stands outside the city walls near York Station.

Lucy Burns, of Fishergate, York, who took this photo, said she thought the incident was “shocking and extremely disrespectful”.

She said: “The statue’s prominent position in Leeman Road means that it is one of the first things visitors see when coming to York city centre from the railway station.”

The statue was erected in recognition of Leeman’s contribution to the development of York, and was carved by local sculptor GW Milburn.

Leeman was a notable lawyer and politician, was Lord Mayor of York three times between 1865 and 1880, but is most well known for his involvement in the country’s burgeoning railway system.
