Pickering couple's road safety message

A COUPLE from North Yorkshire who lost their teenage son in a car accident are using their tragic experience to ensure the same thing does not happen to other young drivers in the region.

Daniel Warin died aged 17 in 1995 while driving home to Pickering after a night out with his girlfriend at the Warner Cinema on Clifton Moor.

He had passed his driving test just three months earlier and lost control of his car on the A170 at night. No alcohol or drugs were involved.

In 2000, his parents David and Janet Warin of Pickering joined forces with police and fires services in North Yorkshire to deliver their message to schools, an undertaking which Mr Warin said was difficult but he believed had saved young lives.

He said: “It’s difficult to do. You are taking about the loss of one of your children.

“No matter how long ago it was it still affects you. You don’t do it without thinking about it.”

The couple speak to teenage pupils in schools as part of special days which include workshops with emergency services.

Mr Warin said: “The problem is that there is no research that this prevents accidents but we have been to schools where we have held the talk and pupils have taken decisions as a result of the day and have avoided been in an accident.”

The couple said they are happy to continue speaking to pupils about their experience as long as the emergency services and the schools want to work with them.

Mr Warin said: “I think last year we managed to come in to contact with over 3000 pupils and we have always had a good reception.

“We have never felt as though we are taking to a captive audience.”
