More snow on its way to York and North and East Yorkshire

SNOW is expected to return to York and North and East Yorkshire tomorrow with freezing temperatures likely to cause hazardous driving conditions all week.

Forecasters are predicting light snow showers this evening, which are expected to continue through into tomorrow.

Night-time temperatures will remain below freezing until at least the weekend. This will be tempered, though, by sunny spells throughout the week and day-time temperatures staying at about 5C.

Weathermen have also predicted that the cold weather will continue through next week, with further, heavier falls of snow possible. The icy weather will mean further pressure for City of York Council and its gritting teams.

The council said it believed it would be able to cope, although there was the possibility that supplies of grit would have to be rationed.

Gritting lorries only went out once over the weekend which meant that currently the council has about 300 tonnes of grit stockpiled.

This is expected to be boosted by a delivery of 100 tonnes from Cleveland Potash tomorrow.

Council leader Coun Andrew Waller said: “That would only bring us back up to 400 tonnes and given a sustained period of snow, that would mean we would have to be extremely economical with its application.”

Oh' gawd, here we go again.

I do like snow but why does the whole country grind to a s*dding halt?!
Not enough grit, drivers who can't cope .. and cyclists before PP jumps in.., power cuts, panic buying & business suffering.

We are a bit of a nonsense really, other countries cope - bet they have a right chuckle watching us all floundering...tch..

Actually in certain parts of America they come to a grinding halt due to rain. Story was on BBC's website last week

Council tax would rise to the sort of levels which would have you moaning even more if we provided the equipment needed to cope totally with really bad 1-in-25 year snow. Other countries often pay more tax for public services so get a better all round provision. Anyway, many other countries don't cope really well with bad snowin the sense of carrying on as normally. In the USA they declare snow days and allow up to three weeks a year when nothing is expected to operate properly in the northern states. Generally things seemed to go along quite well on major routes during the last bad weather. I wouldn't expect every path to be cleared anyway. York city centre was remarkably snow-free. Stoke Poges soldiered on regardless.

Oh' gawd the same old wingers.

I'm glad you're not in charge. You would be proposing we put in under road heating next to deal with these very infrequent events.

Actually I'm not a whinger or a moaner, merely expressing a point of view- minus the insults...

I went to work every day, coped with the road conditions, helped my neighbours and my elderly in laws, and didn't use the weather as an excuse or a reason to blame everyone else.
Nowhere in my post did I suggest otherwise, I simply pointed out what happened .

As for your suggestion (not mine)stoke poges, of increased taxes- what rubbish. Poor countries have far worse weather than us and get on with it. It's not about money but attitude.
We may well be having a 'proper ' winter but that doesn't mean everything should grind to a halt.

Try actually reading what people write before spewing forth your rude remarks.

As soon as someone mentions snow, you get called a whinger. However, you were called a "winger".....is that someone who prefers wings to drumsticks at KFC, or are you a fleet-footed footballer like Aaron Lennon or Ashley Young?

I love insults that are spelt incorrectly
