FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a blaze involving 25 tonnes of straw. The alarm was raised just before 1am today (SUNDAY) at a farm in Gorse Lane, Newthorpe, near Sherburn in Elmet. Two crews from Tadcaster were sent to the scene but had to ask for reinforcements so firefighters from Selby and a water bowser from Tadcaster also headed to the farm. They found a barn measuring around 20m by 10 metres had caught fire. While the farmer tried to drag straw from the building using a tractor, firefighters fought the flames, eventually leaving the farm at around 4am. The cause of the blaze is still being investigated.
