Football fans baffled by Core Alpha Stadium sign

IT’S the mystery which left football fans in York baffled – just where IS the Core Alpha Stadium?

The location of the arena bearing the name became a city-wide riddle after yellow AA signs directing motorists and pedestrians towards it were placed on main routes into York.

Spotted in Bootham and the Outer Ring Road, they pointed towards Bootham Crescent – the home of York City FC, which this week officially reverted to its original name after a four-year sponsorship deal with Nestlé, including retitling the stadium KitKat Crescent, ended.

But City fans will not be watching the Minstermen at the Core Alpha Stadium in future.

The club and City of York Council confirmed in a joint statement: “York City Football Club approached the council to investigate the possibility of erecting direction signs to their ground, Bootham Crescent.

“The club is currently pursuing sponsorship for the naming rights of their stadium. The signs were produced as mock-ups and will shortly be removed.

“York City FC can confirm Core Alpha is not going to be announced as the club’s new ground sponsor.”

And for those who were wondering, Core Alpha Inc is an investment advisory firm in the state of New York.

I am sure the 4 people who go and watch York every week will find their way there.

Strange thing to do - put a sign up for something that doesn't exist.
Ispeed - ho-ho-ho; you logged on just to make the most obvious gag since Chaplin trod on a rake? Bet you are a real hoot at parties....lol.

So where/what exactly is this stadium in York??

Sir Alex, Manchester says...

Hilarious!!!

Why not have the signs say 'York City FC' - at least they would be useful.

Cue the writ from those litigious yanks for wrong use of copyright. Sounds a joke but why risk it?

so the council spent money producing mock signs, and now they will have to make the real thing - utter waste of money as always with this council.........

Exactly Sir Alex - least it would have been some use for the next few months.
Well done YCC though, in comedy terms, this is right up there with arranging a huge bonfire night bash and purposely not telling anyone where it was going to be! :-)

A 'mock up'? Surely that's a typo.

I wonder if the total ost of installing these signs, 'produced as mock-ups' that 'will shortly be removed', cost more than my annual council tax contribution.
If so I think at least they could have let me chose the stadium name.

I think we should all stop trying to work this one out and put it down to utter stupidity on behalf of the council. Again. Also what is the point of directing people to a stadium with no parking!?

MarkW, Poppleton says...
10:15am Fri 5 Feb 10

In fairness YorkFox, the minster has no parking but people still want to know where it is!

King Edward, Taterville says...

A waste on so many levels. It's time the council was investigated properly, and managers and councillors brought to book for misuse of office, as well as funds and equipment. On another issue, do we need any more street signs?

Silver, York says...
10:44am Fri 5 Feb 10

In fairness to CYC here well if the club approaches the council and asks for permission to put up signs for a shortwhile, it doesn't cost the council to let them do it so all the expense should be the football club so no wastage of our money on it.

LibDem, York says...

It was an initiaitive from the Football Club.

York Fox, York says...

But, MarkW, the signs to the Minster are not AA Road direction signs, they are largely foot signs or brown attraction/informati
on signs outside the city directing generally in. If all traffic follows these signs thinking there will be parking there would be chaos!

At least the signs to the Minster do say Minster on them rather than something completely random. Although I would quite like it if they were all changed to 'George Melly's Birthplace' or something.

To all of you panning the Council here for this, the sign will have been paid for by the club and put up by the AA or its agent again at cost to the club. The only involvement from the Council would be in agreeing the location for a temporary period- assuming the AA consulted. As others have pointed out there is no cost to the tax payer.

What to have a non existent stadium name. Rubbish from the LibDems as per usual. Surprised they didn't put up the sign as "Galloway is God" stadium.

a master stroke by YCFC - theres no such thing as bad publicity and maybe the people of york will now be reminded that we still have a football club.

Nah. Most of them are off glory hunting to Leeds now they're winning and on telly again.

Presumably to get there they'll need to follow the signs to the Breville Sandwich Toaster Stadium.

I have nothing really to add - but the security check phrase is "ball-care" and it seems a waste not to use it. Keep checking 'em lads... ;-)

The football club approached the council - there is still a cost to the in time spent discussing it, irrelevant of who paid for the signs. I trust this 'discussion' time was billed as it was for a commercial concern. I can say with certainty any 'discussion' between my business and the council leads to a bill on matters of planning and roads.

There seems to be an assumption this has cost the club/council.

Just as a point to consider. Given it's been done as a test, maybe the AA and/or council insisted on a false name? And, as such, it was done on the cheap? Maybe there were a stash of placeholder-type signs like this?
|
The bottom line is, there'll have been a good reason for what was done. But don't let that stop the inmates having their fun...

I suspect these will now disappear, novelty value to YC fans. There are always signs, usually in hedgerows left over from roadworks, I can think of two on the outer ring, and as scrap metal values are rising someone would be doing us all a favour by clearing up the countryside. Students: want a road cone or lamp to brighten up a bedsit, cycle along the A64 route between York and Tadcaster and take your pick, again helping to Keep Britain Tidy.

Guess again noddyinnapa, I have visited over 60 league grounds watching York City when they actually had players who had a passion for the club and they were competing at a level of football worth watching. I don’t have Sky Sports and loathe the premiership and its collection of overpaid, underworked half wit footballers. Money has ruined the game and it’s not worth watching these days York City included. And finally why would I want to go and sit in a quarter full Wembley watching 2 almost amateur teams when I can leave a seat spare for the real supporters like you?

yeah yeah yeah, knock the council. If you notice, the signs are AA signs, which are erected by PRIVATE concerns, not local councils.

Idiots.
