York's 2010 Race For Life launched in Parliament Street

WOMEN can now sign up to this summer’s York Race For Life, which will have a 10km option for the first time.

Mums, daughters, aunts, nieces, sisters and grandmothers are invited to take part in the event at York’s Knavesmire on Sunday, June 27.

Last year, 4,869 women walked, jogged or ran the event, raising £288,500 for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work.

In 2010, the charity hopes 6,200 women will pull on their running shoes and raise £340,000 to help beat cancer.

Jenny Key, Cancer Research UK’s events manager for York, was in Parliament Street on Saturday, encouraging women to sign up.

She said: “Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life will be full of amazing moments for everyone – from lining up at the start side by side with thousands of other women, to reading the inspirational ‘back-signs’ worn by participants, to the fantastic sense of achievement from crossing the finish line.

“Women of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes take part in Race For Life. They motivate and inspire each other to complete the course. “Many simply walk round, chatting and having fun, but they all share the wonderful atmosphere at the event.”

This year, organisers are giving participants the chance to double their distance by tackling a 10km race which will start at 10am. This will be followed by the normal 5km at 11.30am.

Breast-cancer survivor Lynne Rowe, who wore the number one race badge at last year’s York Race For Life, said she would definitely be signing up to take part in the 5km event this year.

Lynne, 42, completed the distance only weeks after finishing her treatment – and has since gone on to be given the all-clear.

She said: “It’s for a very good cause and it’s also such a fun day. The atmosphere is wonderful and it gives you such a buzz to do it.”
