MORE than 300 York cyclists have added their details to a new police database intended to battle bike crime.
Under Operation Spoke, cyclists register themselves and their machines on a police database, with the bicycle being given a unique police reference number which is written in UV ink on the frame.
Police are then able to reunite stolen or lost bikes with their owners or challenge anyone in possession of a cycle to which they are not registered.
PC Jonathan Hodgeon was with the Guildhall Safer Neighbourhood team in Parliament Street yesterday offering cyclists the chance to register.
He said: “Everybody has been very enthusiastic and it’s been really good fun.
The team will also be in Parliament Street today, Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 3pm.
Cyclists can also discuss the scheme with police community support officers, all of whom have been issued with equipment to register people.
Details can be found at yorkagainstcycletheft.co.uk Other registration events will be held tomorrow at Tang Hall Community Centre, between 10am and noon, and at David Lloyd’s leisure centre on Hull Road, between 10am and 2pm, both tomorrow and on Sunday.
On Saturday, Haxby residents can register between 9am and noon at Ethel Ward Playing Fields and the team will be in Strensall Village Hall car park from 1pm to 4pm.
