Train hits car at Hagg Lane near Hemingborough as snow brings fresh misery to region

A CAR has been hit by a train on a North Yorkshire railway line this morning as some of the heaviest snow of the winter fell on the region.

The collision, involving a TransPennine Express service, happened at around 8.15am today at Hagg Lane between Hemingborough and South Duffield. It is not yet clear whether anybody has been injured.

Meanwhile, around 160 schools across North Yorkshire have been closed today, including Westfield Primary School in York, while Fulford School was also closed to some year groups.

Main roads in York were gridlocked with slow-moving traffic from 7.30am onwards today as motorists struggled to make their way into work on snow-covered and treacherous routes.

Bus companies Transdev and Coastliner, which both operate routes in the city, said their services were running as normal this morning, but delays should be expected, while the A64, A19, A1079 and A1 were all badly affected as heavier snow than had been forecast fell on the region.

More flakes were predicted to drop during Tuesday morning as temperatures continued to hover below the freezing mark, although the snow was expected to ease during the afternoon - but further bad weather has been forecast for the rest of the week.

Ride to work was the most fun I have had in ages, highly amused by the queue of people waiting for the FTR when 200 metres down the round was an empty one stuck in the traffic.

Don't attempt A166. Garrowby Hill is treacherous even for 4x4s. Six inches of snow and still falling at 9.15am. The Bridge at Stamford is unusable and long queues developing.

Waited 20 mins for a no4, gave up and cycled. Little ice, so the snow was perfect for cycling down the lanes, passing the solid, slow moving traffic!

I heard about the FTR broken down. Why is it always these that fail?
Passed four no4s, in a row, stranded in traffic.

walking or cycling seem the best methods of transport today.

I cycled in this morning (as I normally do to be fair) and it was the best laugh I've had in years. Rear end slides that I've not done since I was 15!

Sounds like some silly person stopped on a level crossing?

Why do people not like leaving gaps at junctions and level crossings in these weather conditions? Its almost like they throw their brains out of the car windows in the morning.

Hope they are OK.

That was my first thought, but the article doesn't state that the accident happened on a level crossing. It's quite hard work to put a car on a railway line any other way, though (unless you've stayed up all night doing internet dating!); but in the current weather skidding into and through a flimsy fence, or sliding down an embankment can't be ruled out.

York to Leeds along the A64 was perfectly OK with care and common sense this morning. As with the bout of snow over the weekend before Christmas, it appears to be the minor roads that are the problem.

Took 2 hours to get 30 miles from York to Goole - roads are bad, but traffic moving very very slowly - only had a couple of slidey rear-end moments :-)

As usual the bus companies get the blame for the weather. The reason why people had a long wait for an Ftr was some idiot mis-judged a roundabout and skidded straight into the side of it. As for the issue of icy pavements why not get some of the work shy brigade to put down their super strength lager and do a days work for the first time in their sad lives

Have heard on the grape vine the occupants of the car got out before the train hit and were not injured!

Cycling is always the best form of transport, nothing stops me from riding to work I just view the conditions as a challenge.

Must admit I did reach for the Goretex legwear this morning. I also made sure that I rode the wifes bike in case I did fall off as it would cost far less to fix. Dont want my nice bike getting injured do we now. . .

Other than having to drive a tad more careful I cannot see what all the fuss is about.
