Minster fire drama: Great Window saved

Firefighters have spent more than four hours tackling a fire in the York Minster stoneyard and saving the world's largest stained glass window.

The blaze began shortly before 11.30pm last night in the yard where restorers are working on the Minster's Great East Window, worth £27 million.

Firefighters from York station, Acomb, Huntington, Easingwold and Tadcaster all attended the incident and managed to save the window.

Because they were working on it! Why else?

Ee, your a bright one!

No no..YOU'RE a bright one. (= you are.) You have wrongly used YOUR which sounds similar but is the possessive pronoun eg your bike.
As for the East Window, it has been entirely removed for restoration in the glaziers area of the stoneyard. Inside the Minster, a roof to floor vinyl screen is installed at the window's site, with a full size photo of the window printed on it. Hence visitors can still get a good impression of what it will look like, when fully reinstated.

Well done for saving this historic window. It would have been a tragedy to have lost such a magnificent window.

P Paul I have nogripe with you and I am a cyclist...HOWEVER I find your posts are rather smug and condescending. Do you enjoy possibly "humiliating" other readers by pointing out spelling, grammar etc? How come you know everything? Wnatever subject is being mentioned you know all about it (example today the story behind the window being in the yard to start with) No offence intended but please do not be such a snob. It would be very embarrassing to be ridiculed because of your education, spelling and so on. Happy New Year

I know but some people for whatever reason do not have that good an education and really have trouble with the English language. He just sounds so snug pointing it out.

Oh forgot, people may not know it is not spelt correctly. I think it would be upsetting to ridicule someone in this situation.

Funny thing is, Paul does it as his version of trolling. That and the whole "Good job I didn't leave my *bike* near the fire" type rubbish as well. It's supposed to be a wind-up but most ppl don't even notice.
Has to be the lamest troll ever. It's hilarious when he revels in it later with "Haha reel em in!". Yeah right.
Had a very sheltered web experience if you ask me, must be surfing with child lock on or something, cos it's nothing compared to the real trolls out there.
.
PS How dare CoYC let this fire happen?! It's a disgrace! Heads must roll etc...

Was walking past the Minster last night when the fire engines started turning up. Thick smoke was coming out an extractor pipe on the side of the stoneyard, the main workshops and offices facing onto the Minster School playground.

Even as we watched the smoke started to spread along the first floor level, coming out of the windows and even through some vents in the bricks. Initially I thought it was just a very strong fire in the extractor from sawdust but as the smoke spread along it seemed much worse.

Firefighters got into the playground, cut the guard off one of the stoneyard's ground floor windows and got in that way. After having a look they seemed to hold back and wait for more tenders (including those extendible platforms) to arrive with more men.

We left at that point but I hope it's alright - the structure won't be at threat but some of the work and especially the wooden moulds for stonework were stored on that side. And no amount of lottery cash can replace them.

Goody two pedals is still pontificating to us mere mortals how we should spell etc.

Can you give us an impression of what your brain will be like, if and when it gets finished?

(how is my spelling and grammar - top of the class am I?).

"worth £27 million"?
`
Not sure where they get their valuations from, but in my opinion this window is priceless. It's a consummate work of art... Mr Thornton was the Shakespeare of stained glass, if I can put it like that.
`
I fear most York people don't really appreciate what we have.
`
I blame the council.

As I've said before, this just about sums up your intellectual contributions to these posts. Apart from the glass, there are several tonnes of stone in the Great East Window.

Nice irony. Thank goodness somebody has heard of John Thornton. Putting a price on arguably the finest piece of early C15 glass in Europe is just an actuarial requirement I suppose.
