Top jobs shake-up confirmed at City of York Council

YORK'S civic leaders have agreed to a major restructure, which could see dozens of managerial jobs going at City of York Council.

Within the past hour, the authority's ruling executive has backed proposals by chief executive Kersten England to reduce the number of directorates from six to four.

Two of the top six directors will lose their jobs, along with dozens of other managers.

The move is part of the council’s More for York project, which aims to save £15m over the next three years.

Mrs England said: "Councils across the country are facing serious financial pressures, both as a result of Government funding and increased pressure on services.

"We need to act now to ensure that we can continue to provide high quality services for York in the future."

This is an excellent start, but I just hope the baby isn't getting thrown out with the bathwater.
I hope and pray that the best managers are kept and not the most expensive to lose.

I hope that it's just the start of things to come. York Council is a laughing stock. Council collapses as lone blogger's 'sniping' forces mass walkout

Having read the Mail story I can see why you find the gentleman in question such an inspiration.

You keep fighting the system one local newspaper message board at a time!

How generous of Ms England as well. Being as she earns more than the PM, Gordon Clown, she is taking a 45K pay cut. OUTSTANDING!

Can we have Galloway dancing in his grundies as the Monkey next to an organ grinder next? That would be great value!

I love the hypocrisy of the Daily Mail in the article quoted above. They paint this guy as some kind of local hero but have you ever attempted to post a comment that disagrees with their editorial stance on their web site? Every comment is vetted and unless you’re a right wing numpty you’ll find that your comment never appears. I think their motto is Latin for freedom of the press yes, freedom of speech never.

Because of all the depression about these £15 million cost savings, supplier's bills are going unpaid quoting petty excuses, staff expenses and day-to-day expenses frozen, and most council employees are badly de-motivated. Now, too late, the council are doing knee-jerk gymnastics to get rid of staffing costs whilst avoiding redundancy payments. The York Council's gone fiscally "belly-up" and no-one has a clue how to solve it! All these cuts are being made in a panic.

It is evident that a balance must be struck between the need to economise, and the need to maintain good management of services. Salaries must be comparable with external industry/business to attract candidates of the right calibre and enthusiasm.

As AK7274 states, the matter of who is let go also why, has to be considered, Yet who is capable of doing such a task without bias?. There still remains a fiscally responsible system to improve on.

Yawn, do wish you'd get a basic understanding of issues before giving us the benefit of you opinions. Any economic woes of CYC are more down to the Governments flawed system of rate support than any financial mis-management. These cuts are pre-emptive in anticipation of further cuts in Government support and not due to any immediate cash shortage. As you apparently live in Bishop Wilton why do you spend so much time slating York Council, I don't suppose you'd have a clue what's happening at County Hall in Beverly (That's where your council are based).

Ok everyone was told the council has to make £15 million of savings. So the Chief Exec said change the way the council currently operates instead of 7 groups providing different services consolidate these into 5. This means 2 Directors jobs are likely to go. Hence financial saving, more work for the final 5 but still a cash saving. Oh and i'm including the Chief Exec as one of the 5. Although there is nothing in this statement about the Chief Exec taking a paycut, but still thats a good sign and worthy of respect that says she's not above it all and no other chief exec has taken a paycut in York. Also Galloway froze his pay unlike the chief exec he didn't take a paycut so credit is where credit is due

I agree! It makes a strong START but not a FINISH!
Start with the beginning and remove ALL the department heads and amend the departments to no more
FOUR.
All those who loose heads/jobs...Tough!
NO MONEY! NADDA!
As for Galloway and Reid...ON YOUR BIKE!

I've worked in York for forty five years. I've been buying the EP for as long as I can read. And, finally, I run a business that supplies CoYC with services and goods that is currently long owed invoices for many thousands of pounds by "your" council.
I think that gives me a right to "slate" them, don't you?

Until the mind set of councils change.
.
From spending local tax payers cash to generating cash from other means such as building and running their own electric generation plants in york.
.
Until this happens nothing will ever change as it has now.
.
This re-org is just more smoke screens to keep local residences paying for council staff pensions etc while receiving the same or less services in future.

i cant get my head round how you can slate your own council like this! you dont deserve to have one! how about posting something constructive? got a better idea of how the council should run, try suggesting it to them dont just slag them off. How about tenants staying in for their appointments instead of costing people time and money by "popping to the shop" when they know they have an appointment. If people continue to slander our council there wont be one and who will you all get to fix your homes or roads or anything else in this town for that matter! try acting like a community and stick up for your assets befor you loose them for good.

How about sacking them all? Hows that for constructive? By your "user name", you're fed up with something, you might just find that everybody on here is fed up with this money wasting council. Sound from your comment that you work for them!!!???

it's not just top managers going, my husband is under threat and he's a v.low earner, nevertheless we rely on the income, of course. and how can any of you be thrilled about people losing their jobs? particularly in a job market as poor as york's is, even in good times. i've lived in york only a few years so i compare this council with the one i had before and believe you me folks, you're very lucky to have what you do.
