POLICE have launched an investigation into a suspicious blaze which broke out at a house in York.
The fire damaged part of the terraced house in Tang Hall Lane. It is thought it started in several different places in the living room. A pile of rubbish and paper in the kitchen were also set alight.
Firefighters were called to the scene at around 3.10am yesterday and believe the fire was started deliberately. Nobody was in the house at the time.
Next-door neighbour Donald Plummer said: “We woke up because we could smell smoke.
“It was quite scary. There was smoke coming through from somewhere and our room was full of smoke, so we phoned the fire brigade.
“Next door, the settee was on fire and it filled the room with toxic black smoke.
“Nobody was at home when it happened. I haven’t a clue who started it, but the police say it was suspicious.”
Anybody who has any information about the blaze should phone North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060 247.
