A COMMUNITY nursery in York which helps people recovering from mental health problems learn new skills was today bringing a festive end to its first season.

The Poppleton Community Railway Nursery was throwing open its doors to visitors with a pre-Christmas sale of plants, shrubs and seasonal table decorations, with hot drinks being served up to stave off the winter chill.

Operating from Poppleton station, the nursery saw teams of local volunteers work to bring it back to life after a period in the doldrums, while also allowing patients with mental health issues to develop their horticulture and social skills in collaboration with NHS North Yorkshire and York.

“A good deal of the heavy clearance work has been undertaken by the Probation Service’s Community Payback team, which has also done a lot elsewhere in Poppleton, and enthusiasts who come from far and wide to maintain the nursery’s own small railway system are going from strength to strength,” said a spokesman for the organisation.
