Pocklington RUFC were relieved to scrape a 12-10 victory away to lowly Hessle in Yorkshire Two.

Hessle had the early pressure and opened the scoring in the seventh minute when simple passing along the line from a scrum gave them a try in the corner.

Pocklington dominated the rest of the first half, with plenty of set-piece ball and field position, but errors and wrong options prevented them from converting pressure into points.

They edged ahead on the half-hour when they went for a pushover scum four times in succession.

The first two collapsed as Pock’s pack drove towards the line and, from the third, Marcus Britland was held on his back, but number eight Britland finally got the touch down at the next attempt. Joe Holbrough converted.

Hessle started the second half with another overlap try from a scrum – and Pocklington again replied strongly as they ran back a clearance before flanker Karl Durkin dived over.

Mistakes and penalties proliferated on both sides as play deteriorated in the final quarter, but Pock almost threw it away in the dying minutes.

They presented Hessle with a couple of penalty chances that both fell short, before another Pocklington knock on gave Hessle one final lifeline.

Former Wales fly-half and Pocklington player coach, Gary Pearce, had been called out of retirement to play for Hessle but he saw his drop goal attempt squirt wide.
