FRESH safety calls have been made for the A1079 between York and Hull, after a car crash left a 13-year-old girl in hospital.

The teenager, from Pocklington, had to be cut free by firefighters after the beige Renault Megane she was in left the road and landed in a ditch near Barmby Moor.

She was kept in York Hospital overnight with minor injuries, but has since been released. The driver, a 42-year-old man, also from Pocklington, was also cut free, but was unhurt.

The accident happened at 4pm on Sunday, four days after local pensioner Audrey Prince died while trying to cross the trunk road at Barmby Moor.

East Yorkshire MP Greg Knight, a long-term campaigner for improvements on the A1079, said he was now trying to secure funding to upgrade the route.

“I am lobbying transport ministers to see if there is extra money they can give East Riding of Yorkshire Council,” he said.

“I have also written to the chief executive of the council asking him if they can bring forward any plans to improve road safety.”
