THESE pupils from Burnholme Community College in York have a growing concern on their hands as they look forward to producing their own food.
The year seven pupils intend to sow the seeds of self-sufficiency and reduce their school’s dependency on bought foods by growing their own fruit and vegetables. Simon Gumn, head teacher at the school, said: “Our young people are getting stuck into finding out about sustainability and issues around preserving our environment for future generations. Growing and using our own food is a great step towards this.”
The initiative is a joint effort between Burnholme, York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership and City of York Council, who helped pupils design their own garden.
The children will also be learning about the historical significance of people growing their own food by looking at the famous Dig For Victory campaign during the Second World War.
