Peter William Brown appears at Scarborough Magistrates' Court charged with the murder of Jan Wilson and Jamie Kyne

A MAN has appeared in court this morning charged with the murder of two young jockeys in a blaze which tore through a block of flats in a North Yorkshire town.

Peter William Brown, 37, spoke only to confirm his name and address when he appeared before a two-minute hearing at Scarborough Magistrates' Court.

He faces two charges of murder following the fire which claimed the lives of apprentice jockeys Jamie Kyne, 18, from County Galway in the Republic of Ireland, and 19-year-old Jan Wilson, from Forfar in Scotland, on September 5.

The teenagers died when the blaze broke out on the second floor of the flats in Buckrose Court in the early hours of the morning. Two other jockeys were also injured.

Brown, whose address was given as Lyndale Caravan Park, Brotherton, Knottingley, and who was wearing a white T-shirt over a blue jumper and green Converse trainers when he appeared in court today, listened from the dock as his solicitor, Richard North, said he would not be making an application for bail.

He has yet to enter a plea to the two murder charges and was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at Leeds Crown Court next Friday.
