HOUSING bosses in York have secured a landmark prosecution against a landlord who failed to properly maintain his property.
Michael David Grosvenor, 68, was fined £1,000 and told to pay £766.52 costs, for failing to manage his house in multiple occupation in a suitable manner.
Grosvenor, of Heworth in York, pleaded guilty at York Magistrates Court to four charges, including failing to ensure that firefighting equipment and fire alarms were maintained in good working order and failing to ensure all common parts of the property were maintained in good and clean decorative repair.
The charges were the first brought by City of York Council under the Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006 and the Housing Act 2004.
Ruth Abbot, of the council’s private housing team, said: “Landlords and tenants need to know that we take the safety of private rented sector tenants as a very serious matter.”
She said Grosvenor had 39 years’ experience as a landlord.
