Man badly hurt in A19 crash

A MAN suffered serious injuries when the car he was travelling in left a busy North Yorkshire road and collided with a fence and some trees.

A police spokeswoman said that as a result of the incident, which happened on the northbound carriageway of the A19 just north of Thirsk, five men were taken to Middlesbrough’s James Cook Hospital where they were this morning undergoing treatment. “One of them has sustained very serious injuries,” the spokeswoman said.

The crash, which happened at 12.10am, involved a black Renault Clio.

One of the men was trapped in the car and fire brigade crews cut the roof off the vehicle and removed him from the Clio. A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said the man had head, chest, leg and internal injuries. He said: “The car had left the carriageway, gone across the grass verge, collided with two trees, and rolled a number of times before coming to rest in a field.” The police spokeswoman said: “The road was closed for some time to allow police to conduct their investigation.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the Clio prior to the collision to contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 247.
