Hugh Bayley met with some of the top police officers in North Yorkshire to mark the reduction of crime in York.
Mr Bayley, the city’s Labour MP, met with Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick and Superintendent Lisa Winwood, as the force marked a 17 per cent reduction in crime in York and Selby between April and November compared with the same period last year, including a significant fall in the number of burglaries.
Schemes such as Operation Joypad – which sees officers testing the door handles of houses to check whether they were locked – and Operation Maestro which raises awareness of car security – has contributed towards the fall in crime, said police.
Assistant Chief Constable Madgewick said: “Both Operation Joypad and Operation Maestro highlight the excellent results which can be achieved by working together with out partners, local businesses and members of the public.
“It sends a clear message that North Yorkshire is a no-go area for all criminals.”
Mr Bayley said: “The effect of burglary on victims can be traumatic, wide ranging and long-lasting and the seriousness of this crime should not be underestimated.”
Meanwhile, Mr Bayley has welcomed Communities Secretary John Denham’s decision to allocate funding to tackle antisocial behaviour in York.
The £44,000 is part of a £10 million package of measures targeted at 130 local councils where anti-social behaviour has been highlighted as a growing concern.
