Coming second isn’t always a bad thing, especially if you are London boy band JLS. After finishing runners-up in last year’s The X Factor, you’d be forgiven for thinking they would call it a day; but, no, they bounced back.

Last weekend’s scary stampede in Birmingham suggests they are now more popular than ever. Their self-titled debut album kicks off with their catchy and upbeat first single, the chart-topping Beat Again, followed by current hit Everybody In Love. Unfortunately, these remain the most memorable.

There are a few minor gems, such as Only Tonight and Kick Start, but they do not pull you in like the first two do. It would have been nice if the boys had experimented a little more, but perhaps their X Factor mentor, Louis Walsh, had too much of an influence at the start and led them away from R’n’B towards the boy-band safety zone.
