Julie and John Berridge beat the odds to receive degrees at York Minster

A COUPLE’S astonishing battle against adversity ends in triumph today when they are both presented with degrees at York Minster.

Julie and John Berridge, both 30, of Horner Street, off Burton Stone Lane, York, have succeeded on separate courses at York St John University despite both having to undergo major surgery in recent years.

John, a former Royal Engineer, suffered a severe back injury when a rocket propelled grenade exploded near him during the Iraq war of 2003.

His injuries included three crushed discs and two fractured vertebrae and he had to be flown on a stretcher back to Britain, where he had to lie in bed for almost a year.

He was medically discharged and eventually underwent an operation to insert a titanium disc and protective “cages” around his broken vertebrae. This has helped deal with the condition and enabled him to walk short distances, although he will still need to use morphine patches to control the pain for the rest of his life.

“I also suffer from flashbacks and nightmares caused by my experiences in Iraq,” he said.

“I used to lash out in my sleep. It’s now been diagnosed as post traumatic stress disorder.”

Julie suffered excruciatingly painful trigeminal neuralgia for a year after a blood vessel in her brain burst against a nerve, and doctors eventually operated to insert sponges to separate the blood vessel from the nerve, which greatly reduced the severity and frequency of attacks.

“My neurosurgeon said it is the worst pain you can get from a non-fatal medical condition. It’s known as the ‘suicide condition’ because it’s so bad that some people kill themselves.”

But the couple, who met when they were pupils at Huntington School and married ten years ago, refused to let their misfortune stop them entering academia.

Julie got a BA 2:1 degree in business management last year, narrowly missing a first class Honours degree, and has now got an MA in leadership and management. “I have been told I could go on to take a doctorate but can’t afford the fees,” she said.

John, who suffers from extreme dyslexia and left school with only one GCSE at grade C or over, has got a 2:1 degree in history, and hopes to go on to take an MA and would like eventually to become a lecturer in history. “I think I could bring a different perspective to it,” he said.

Julie said: “I’m really happy and extremely proud of John.” John said: “I’m proud of what Julie has achieved – despite her illness and putting up with me as well!”

Julia added that she and John would like to thank the Royal British Legion and the charity Combat Stress for the help they had given over the past year.

Anyone can be accepted onto a doctorate course as long as they have a 2:1. If she was that good she'd have been awarded funding for a doctorate so that she wouldn't have to pay fees.

That is if Saint John's University offer doctorates.

What a curmudgeonly attitude. Even if you are correct read the story. It is good news about winning over problems. You probably criticise the wrapping paper of the birthday presents you get.

If people can't take the time to wrap my birthday presents well then they ought to expect criticism. :-P

Since when do Universities hand out fees to all and sundry for Doctorates?! Simple answer is - they don't.

Well done to the both of them, a real triumph against adversity.

If a student has a good enough profile, there are a lot of doctoral funding opportunities (i.e. where the cost of the fees is covered by the funding body and the student receives an annual tax-free salary) at high-ranking universities.

Hence my point about whether Saint John's even do PhDs!

What a surprise. Someone achieves their ambition against all odds and as usual morons come out of the woodwork trying to belittle their achievements.

I was at York College with John 4 years ago where we both completed Access courses that enabled us to go to University. I'm sure John won't mind me saying how hard it was for him and I must admit I was a liitle surprised to hear he'd actually got through this and gained his degree. I am over the moon for him. A fantastic achievement.

As for whoever "Procrastinaction" is, what have you ever achieved or done for society? Nothing I imagine. Nasty, petty, jealousies like yours lead to a sad and unfulfilled life - well at least I hope so in your case! Did St. Johns turn you down sometime and you are now holding a grudge?

The Berridges are an inspiration for anyone who doubts they can achieve an ambition.

Congratulations to you both.

Sorry but getting a degree isn't news. Getting a job is.

Getting a degree in the face of adversity certainly is news. It's also far more interesting than reading about Cllr. James Alexander/Blanchard and his vacuous opinions.

I'm pretty sure the Berridge's could have got a job alongside you at McDonald's Mr Taxpayer.

Perhaps they have more ambition...

I've known both John and Julie since i started at St.John with John back in Sept 2006, they are both an inspiration to me and the best type of people you could ever hope to meet and call your friends. On top of their own troubles they also helped me during a difficult time in my life, if you haven't got anything but a decent comment or congratulations to add to a story about triumphing against the odds, why bother? you must be quite a sad person to trawl positive news stories on the web and add negative comments. Get a life. P.S Graduating WAS news to all the people who graduated from St.Johns over the last 2 days. Well done to all.
