SUSPECTED cases of swine flu have reached a new peak in York as the UK battles the second wave of the pandemic.

Figures released by health bosses in North Yorkshire have revealed 17 people have been admitted to York Hospital with symptoms of the illness in the last two weeks.

That is the largest fortnightly swine flu tally seen in the city since the bug began to sweep across the country, with a further 11 cases reported in the areas covered by Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Six people have been admitted to hospital suffering from flu-like symptoms in Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust’s area, while Scarborough and North East Yorkshire NHS Trust reported three possible cases. Yorkshire and the Humber has seen one swine flu-related death since October 15, although there has been no confirmation about where this person was from.

Across England, the number of new swine flu cases leapt by 53,000 to a total of 78,000 last week – signalling the the second peak of the pandemic. It comes as the vaccination programme starts to be rolled out across the country, with almost 14 million people in groups deemed to be most at risk of infection being the first in the queue to get the jabs.
