MORE than 700 children from eight primary schools across York filled the minster to celebrate the International Year Of The Child.

Sally Sutton, deputy head teacher of Archbishop of York’s Junior School, Bishopthorpe, who helped to organise the service, said: “It’s been wonderful. I was overjoyed to see more than 700 young people from all over the city coming together to worship God.

“Children are not the future of our church or society – they are its present.

“The International Year Of The Child is a great opportunity to celebrate the role of children all over the world.”

The Ven Richard Seed, Archdeacon of York, led the service.

He said: “The International Year Of The child turns the world topsy turvy, teaching us adults that we need to be more like children.”

Children from Heworth, St Barnabas’, St Paul’s, Archbishop of York’s, Naburn, St Mary’s, St Oswald’s and St Lawrence’s Church of England Primary Schools watched drama performed by Riding Lights Theatre Company, York, and listened to a talk from the archdeacon.

Tracey Richards, of Archbishop of York Junior School, led the music, accompanied by musicians from Archbishop Holgate’s School and York Community Church.
