Family has miraculous escape after lorry tips on to their car on A64 near York

A FAMILY had a miraculous escape after a fully-laden articulated lorry tipped over on to their Land Rover on the A64 near York.

The accident happened at 3.30pm on Saturday in the Leeds-bound lanes of the Hopgrove roundabout.

Sgt Graham Carroll, of North Yorkshire Police, said the vehicles had been travelling in adjacent lanes when the lorry appeared to go out of control, hit the family’s Land Rover Freelander and rolled on top of it, crushing the driver’s side.

The Land Rover was towing a trailer with a Laguna estate on it which was also crushed.

Sgt Carroll said it was miraculous the family had not suffered serious injuries or even being killed.

He said: “I think the people in the car have been extremely fortunate.

“I’ve seen vehicles with less damage than that where people have lost their lives.” Upon arrival, firefighters and the police found the Land Rover family were out of their vehicle, but the driver of the lorry, which was transporting biomass to be burned at a power station, was trapped in his cab.

Fire crews from York and Tadcaster freed him using cutting equipment.

He was believed to have suffered head and arm injuries, and was placed on a spinal board as a precaution.

He was taken to York Hospital but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The family was also taken to York Hospital for a check up.

The accident caused long tailbacks for thousands of motorists heading west-bound on the A64.

The Leeds-bound lanes of the road at the roundabout were closed while the vehicles were recovered meaning traffic was diverted on to the A1237 or through the city centre, causing long tailbacks in Malton Road.

What a miracle the family in the Land Rover was unhurt. The poor lorry driver came off worst and we wish him a speedy recovery. Saw the aftermath of the accident on Saturday and it was horrendous. Looks like the lorry failed to negotiate the sharp right hand bend around the roundabout - there are skid marks at that point from the right hand lane across the left hand one and lorry was tipped on its left hand side across the crash barrier. This first accident happening so soon after the roundabout was completed will, we fear, be only one of many. It is now far more dangerous than it was before - just look at all the skid marks where the traffic lights have changed to red without any warning. The slip lanes on the roundabout to A64 westbound are particularly nasty, having several sharp bends in them which are not lorry friendly. All in all it was a complete and utter waste of money. It does nothing for the long tailbacks both ways on the A64 and in fact has made them far worse. It would have been better and safer to have spent the money on dualling the road with a flyover at the Hopgrove.

Seems like (another) great reason to own a sturdy 4x4 to me. Wonder how the pedalling one would have fared on his holy push-rod...?

I have to agree with "Shouter" - from the day the roadworks began to show the feeder slip road onto the A64 Westbound it was obvious that this was going to be quite a tight bend. This is going to be the first of many accidents of this type in my opinion until this bend is straightened out! Thank God the injuries were not fatal, but seeing the immediate aftermath of that accident was HORRENDOUS and very frightening.

I FEEL THAT SINCE THIS ROUNDABOUT HAS BEEN RECONSTRUCTED THAT IT NEEDS FURTHER MODIFICATION. THE TURN FROM THE RING ROAD ONTO THE WEST BOUND A64 FOR HGV'S IS UNSUITABLE, THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ARC AND THEREFORE THIS WILL RESULT IN FURTHER ACCIDENTS THE SAME AS THIS ONE, PERHAPS WORSE IN FUTURE, IF THIS IS NOT RECTIFIED.

It's bad enough in a car, I came from stockton on the forest towards leeds on friday night in the rain and it is a very tight turn indeed. I wasn't going very quick as the lights were red when i got there but i used both lanes to stop the car sliding.

I was in the Landrover, and I still can not believe it, I wish the driver of the lorry a sincere and speedy recovery. We will never drive a car again, the 4x4 saved our lives and I dont care what anybody says, we will always drive a 4x4, we will always feel safer in a 4x4. That vehicle was a credit to Landrover. If anybody see's this and were the people envolved in helping us get out of the landrover, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your courage and bravery in all that you did.

Hello Mavlyn3. Reading your post above, we are delighted that you and your family are safe and unhurt and are thinking of you (you must have been traumatised following that horrendous experience, you poor things) and the injured lorry driver too. We send your family and the lorry driver and anyone else who was involved, positive, healing thoughts. Thanks also to the kind people that helped you out of your Landrover and kept you safe.

When you travel eastbound towards the roundabout you are faced with 14 lights!! We travelled this way at 3.30am on the way home from the airport and got stopped by all 14 red lights and waited 21 seconds for them to change. We were the only car on the road. if that is supposed to help traffic flow I'll eat my cap.

With over 30 traffic lights this is just a death trap and a huge waste of public money. This nonsense ought to be stopped now. The designers should hold responsibility as with the monstrosity which is Heworh Roundabout. Roundabouts are being taken on board by countires throughout the world because they are an efficuent and easy wy to route traffic. It's only UK that has started to put traffic lights up on them all. Leave them alone. Are these highway designers non drivers or kids or something??

There's been quite the spate of lorries overturning on York's roundabouts just lately. I'm pretty sure I read someone on here (probably pedalling paul proclaiming public policy as per usual) telling us that roundabout junctions are being reworked with sharper angles to deliberately slow traffic down and discourage racing across.
I know for sure that new roundabout at Badger Hill for the uni is well counter-intuitive to negotiate and I'm not impressed with the new Hopgrove either.

Maybe these accidents have been induced by over-enthusiastic meddling?

I'm really glad no one was seriously hurt in this accident and I wish you all well.

I watch the construction of the roundabout 'improvements' and wasn't happy with the integration of the kerbed areas to divide the traffic - instinctively knew if anything clipped those kerbs as speed it would turn the vehicle over - the most sensible thing that could happen would be to remove the kerbs.

I use this roundabout on a daily basis its tricky specially when traffic cuts in up your inside and its happened to me twice - there will be more serious accidents if something isn't done soon!
