A MAN has been arrested in connection with the loss of £10,000 from a York working men’s club, police have revealed.
Police confirmed the man was arrested last week in connection with the case at Acomb Working Men’s Club, in Front Street.
He is believed to have handed himself in to police last Wednesday and has since been released on bail until October 12.
The man is known to be a member of the club, but has now been barred for “his own safety” according to one committee member.
Club secretary John Laine said:“We are just watching this space at the moment. All we can do is advise and help the members.”
The cash belonged to members of a group within the club which was set up to organise a trip to last month’s Rugby League Cup Final at Wembley.
The cash had been collected from about 30 members throughout the year and though there was enough to pay the accommodation and travel bill, the missing £10,000 meant there was no spending money for the outing.
One of those left out of pocket was Warren Mapplebeck, who said he is unsure if he will ever see again the £680 he was due to receive back on the day of the trip.
He said there was currently confusion over the situation.
He said: “There are a lot of rumours flying around, but there are no hard facts or evidence.
“I am £680 down, but if you were to believe the rumours there seems to be a good chance we will get it back, but until I see it in my hand I won’t believe it.”
