STUDENTS at York’s newest sixth form have had their first day of lessons in their £4 million state-of-the-art building.

The Learning Centre, at Archbishop Holgate’s School, opened its doors for the first time yesterday, welcoming 65 new students.

The building features cutting-edge facilities and equipment for a wide range of subjects, including science, business, engineering and information technology.

The centre’s creative and media studios are another top attraction, alongside its dedicated study and conference areas.

John Harris, the school’s head teacher, said: “This is a very exciting moment in the 463-year story of Archbishop Holgate’s School.”

“Students, staff and parents are all saying how impressed they are by the new learning centre and how they are committed to its success. “These outstanding new facilities put us at the very forefront of post-16 providers in York and the surrounding area.”

The new sixth form, which is known as the LearningCentre@AHS, offers a variety of study opportunities, including A-levels, diplomas, BTECs and industry standard qualifications.

Staff have also forged strong partnerships with local, national and international businesses, enabling students to develop the necessary skills for degree-level study and employment. “High-quality teaching and learning, outstanding care and support, and the values of a Christian foundation are at the heart of the LearningCentre@AHS,” said Mr Harris. “We believe students flourish best in a hard-working and professional learning environment, with high expectations, excellent individual support, and an outstanding range of wider opportunities. “We welcome to the new LearningCentre@AHS all those who share these aims.”

Last week, about 30 members of the congregation from local churches visited the new sixth form to pray for its success.

Mr Harris said: “With a caring and professional environment, the highest quality of teaching and support, excellent business links, and the ethos and standards of an outstanding church school, we believe the LearningCentre@AHS offers students a learning experience unique in York.”
