‘Sir Cliff’ Shaun Bimpson to judge best Elvis at The Crescent Club, York

AN unexpected famous face is coming to York to head up the judging panel at a world-class Elvis competition being held in the city this weekend.

The Elvis Academy have secured the services of Shaun Bimpson – the UKs number one Cliff Richard tribute act – as their “celebrity judge” for what has been heralded at the UK’s best Elvis Competition.

Event organiser Eddie Vee said: “We thought it would be a good idea to get somebody totally neutral to judge the competition, as some Elvis acts judge the shows on how they do Elvis and have their own take on things-so it was decided that somebody with no real Elvis connection would be ideal.

“Shaun played in a skiffle rockabilly band in the 80s performing songs by Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and a few of the early Elvis songs.

“However, his real love of Cliff Richard took over and he has been performing and touring with his stage show Totally Cliff for the last three years.

“Audiences should be able to see him perform a set of his songs on both Saturday and Sunday at the event. Currently we have 16 of the UK’s best Elvis acts involved in the event-but entrants for the competition are welcome, but should get in touch by Thursday.” The event takes place at The Crescent Club, The Crescent, Blossom Street, York. Doors open from noon on Saturday till midnight and noon on Sunday till 11.15pm. Half of the proceeds from the event will be donated directly to the British Heart Foundation charity.

Eddie said: “Elvis really put his heart into all his shows and raised millions for charities, so Elvis tributes know how important the heart is, and that the British Heart Foundation plays a vital part in taking care of hearts.”
