A WACKY world record is staying on the other side of the Atlantic – despite the best efforts of York’s strongest stomachs to break it.
The York Maze was the venue for a bizarre scoffing contest at the weekend as it played host to the UK Sweetcorn Eating Championships, with competitors challenged to munch through as much corn on the cob as they could in the space of 12 minutes.
But they found the task of beating the current record – held by New Yorker Crazy Legs Conti, who chomped through 34-and-a-quarter ears of corn in that time – too much to handle, with York’s best effort being ten-and-a-half.
Saturday’s event was part of the annual Sweetcorn Festival staged at the York Maze, near Elvington – with other events including a corn food display, a barbecue and a jazz band.
