The Duchess of Sutherland on its way to Scarborough Buy this photo »
THE sights and sounds of the steam era have been brought to life again in North Yorkshire.
The Scarborough Flyer steam service made the first of its weekly summer holiday trips to the coast yesterday.
The 1938-built maroon giant 6233 Duchess of Sutherland steamed into Crewe, Wilmslow, Stockport, Huddersfield, Wakefield Kirkgate and York on route to Scarborough.
Crewe-built 6201 Princess Elizabeth will take charge of The Scarborough Flyer on August 7 and 21, Duchess of Sutherland will return for the, August 14, trip and 60009 Union of South Africa, built in Doncaster in 1937, will haul the Flyer on August 28.
* The steam locomotive which appeared in the famous 1936 film Night Mail will be running the Cumbrian Mountain Express to Carlisle tomorrow. For tickets phone the Railway Touring Company on 01553 661500.

Those were the days. A smokin' steam train seems to bring something out of people that the electric rail cars don't. Flem.
