Fire in skip at BCB Environmental Management Limited, Tockwith

DETAILS have emerged about a fire at a waste disposal company near Tockwith.

It started just after 7pm on Sunday, at BCB Environmental Management Limited, in Marston Business Park. It took one-and-a-half hours to be brought under control.

BCB managing director Phil Boardman said the fire started in a skip locked inside a unit, and no hazardous waste was involved.

He said: “A fire was reported at about 7pm, when someone noticed smoke coming from vents in the hangar. The fire service was notified immediately and established that it was a small fire in a steel skip containing non-hazardous waste.

“The fire was extinguished shortly after 9pm, and the fire service left the site at about 10pm. We are still investigating the cause of the blaze, but at present the most likely explanation is spontaneous combustion. Although the skip has been destroyed, other damage has been minimal.”

The Environment Agency was also at the scene of the fire, but a spokeswoman said it had no concerns.

So a company wanting to deal with thousands of tonnes of highly toxic waste has it's third fire within a short space of time.

A fire which started in a skip locked away within it's own premises when it must know it is under close scrutiny.

And the environment agency has no concerns. Surely the EA should be very concerned that a company with such a poor record wants to take control of hazerdous materials !

Unbelieveable. The firemen had to break the door down to gain access, there were no sprinklers, no DR plan, no list of the chemicals stored on site and the EA is not concerned? See www. tockwith.net for the photos. This could have been really serious if the chemicals had gone up - remember Allied Colloids in Bradford in 1992?

Small fire? I don't think so!!! As a witness to the clouds of black smoke I was thankful the wind was blowing away from Tockwith residents (on this occasion). BCB have yet again shown their incompetence.
