FIREFIGHTERS were last night tackling a blaze at a waste disposal station in a village near York.

Six fire crews fought the flames at BCB Environmental Management Limited, in Marston Business Park, Tockwith.

The alarm was raised at 7.15pm and it took one-and-a-half hours for firefighters to bring the fire under control.

The Environment Agency was also called to the scene, but it is believed no chemicals were involved.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “We do not know the cause of the fire.

“As far as we are aware, the building was locked up and secure and no staff were inside.”

The firm recently submitted a planning application to build a waste incinerator capable of processing up to 60,000 tonnes of waste each year.

Tockwith resident Richard Rawlins, who lives in Westfield Green, said: “It is a concern for residents. This is the third time in a year that fire engines have been called to the facility and if the application gets through, they will be given very hazardous chemicals to handle and incinerate.

“You have to ask the question, how certain are you that they will be able to do that?”

Nobody from BCB Environmental was available to comment.
