YORK’S former Odeon cinema looks set to reopen on Friday, June 19, with a premiere screening of one of the summer’s blockbuster movies, Transformers 2.

Up to 25 contractors are working around the clock to restore the art deco cinema to its former glory, with another 20 local people having now been taken on to run the picturehouse.

With the complex in Blossom Street a hive of activity, cinema boss Kailash Suri revealed today the refurbishment project is running to schedule, despite now going further than originally envisaged.

He said instead of just carrying out improvements to the original toilets – the “disgusting” state of which was heavily criticised during The Press Save The Odeon cinema campaign – the suites were being replaced completely, with new disabled toilets installed near the foyer as well. There would also be provision for customers in wheelchairs in the two ground-floor cinemas.

He said the ceiling above the foyer was being re-plastered and a new ticket and merchandise kiosk was being installed, while a “virtually new canopy” had been created outside to replace the old one which was in an almost dangerous and leaky condition.

New cinema screens were also being installed this week in all three cinemas, while seats in the big screen auditorium had been removed to be restored and replaced.

“It’s still going to plan and we will hopefully open on Friday, June 19, subject to everything being in place,” he said.

“We would hope to open with the premiere of Transformers 2 in the big screen, with maybe a children’s movie in one of the smaller screens. We may invite some local school children along.”

Mr Suri said a temporary Reel York sign would be going up on the canopy next week, with a planning application having gone in to City of York Council for a permanent sign at a later date.

He said the reopening of the cinema was creating a great deal of interest in York. “We are getting around ten to 15 emails every day from the public,” said Mr Suri.

“This is very encouraging and gives us hope.”

I cant wait, I hope they keep the prices reasonable though, because Vue is extortionate!

I'm with you Henry I do hope it is more affordable than Vue its over my side of town and I always used to use it previusly rather than have to slog up to Clifton Moor the Odeon is now within walking distance for me so not only will it be cheaper than other venues (I hope) but greener as far as transport goes
too.

Excellent news. Hopefully ticket prices won't be in the range of 'Rip-off Vue'.

Can't wait to get back in to watch films again.

Many thanks to Reel for having the vision to give it a go.

although I am looking forward to another cinema in York especially as it will be easier for me to get to I am concerened that nit much will change from the original state there is no talk of high quality viewing or sound which will be needed to compete with the others and by the looks of the picture the decor doesnt look like it has been updated. If this is going to be a success it cannot rely on cheap tickets alone.

Good luck to the man - dipping in to his own pocket and trying something that benefits the city of York. I hope he makes a success of it.

surely the decor and stuff will be updated, it was manky before so after years of being unused it will have been a health hazard!! they can't do much to it as its listed so the art deco facades and coving will have to stay! Really hope that the prices are attractive- feel a little stung after paying £6.80 for a Vue ticket at 9.30am on a sunday morning!!

Do I remeber rightly thinking that before it closed the Odean used to charge £1.50? They should open up with a "special offer" ticket discount : )
The price of Vue is extortionate, and to boot it's not particularly comfortabley seated either. I wouldn't mind paying £7 if I was in a nice comfy seat!

Well done to Reel for re-opening the Odean I wish you every success.

High quality viewing or sound? I reckon you get what you pay for and if it wasn't for this guy paying the costs himself to start with re-opening the place we wouldn't have this monumental place re-used in york so I'm glad of that seeins as Vue is the other side of town and City Screen isn't quite there. Even if the decor isn't amazing it's nice to have the place back than it sat there derelict, I only object to the Reel york sign, I think it deserves to keep it's ODEON one that's been proudly displaying all these years.
