REFURBISHMENT work has begun on York’s troubled Odeon Cinema.
Workmen have been seen at the site, and lights on inside the building suggest work has started.
Reel Cinemas UK agreed to buy the Blossom Street landmark in 2007 and completed the deal the following January.
Company owner Kailash Suri initially said the 1930s picture-house would reopen in summer 2007, but work has been slow and he recently said the recession was forcing the company to proceed with caution.
Mr Suri has regularly promised to unveil full details of his plans, but has deferred a series of announcements.
He told The Press on Monday that he would meet his architects later this month and outline the refurbishment plans after that.

Writing as a former cinema manager and who has kept half an eye on the economics of the industry in the nine years since, IMHO that site is fundamentally not commercially viable as a cinema. Sorry - I know that's not the message a lot of people reading this would like to hear. I've written long posts setting out my reasoning on previous story threads about the Blossom Street building, the gist of which is that it's just too expensive to run relative to its likely income from showing films, given the state of the distribution/exhibit ion sector nationally and the situation locally. If Mr. Suri is prepared to run it at a loss, perhaps as a loss leader for other business ventures, or to try to suck in some public arts subsidy in some form or another, then good luck to him. I just can't see how it's going to work any other way.
