Regarding the letters about the issuing of parking tickets to cars parked on the verge on Sim Balk Lane, Yvonne Styan (Soccer parking ticket “disgrace”, Letters, March 10) blames the planners for “lack of foresight” in the size of the 600-space car park.

In fact, if the council is to be criticised, it is for failing to monitor the effectiveness of the “travel plan” submitted by the college as part of its planning application. Parking on the grass verge near to the college entrance has been creating a hazard for traffic emerging from the college car park, at a point where motorists are just going from a 60mph to 30mph limit.

As reported in The Press not long after the college opened, there has been at least one potentially very serious collision here and parking on the verge blocking the view of the car park entrance could lead to more. The college was originally going to have a parking permit system that excluded anyone living within three miles of the college, but staff opposition led to permits being made available to anyone with a licence for a minimum of nine months.

The solution that Yvonne seeks is not to provide for even more cars on this already busy road, but to maintain and improve the public transport, provide lighting and a safe cycle lane so that people from Bishopthorpe feel safe walking or cycling to college or the football ground at all times of the year.

Perhaps the opening of the new cycle lanes over Moor Lane bridge will encourage more to get on their bikes to get fit, whether or not they play football.
