FOLLOWING a doctor’s appointment I decided to go to the nearest chemist, in East Parade, Heworth, though I don’t normally use it.

On arrival by the mini-roundabout in East Parade I parked behind a car, looking on the post sign to see that it was an R30 zone with 60 minutes parking allowed. I was very perplexed as I exited my car to see double yellow lines on the same bay. Surely if a sign announces the parking rules and then is contradicted by later (one assumes) yellow lines this is illegal. On my return a van was also parked in the bay.

I went to London’s to ask if they knew whether parking was allowed there or not. They said they thought that it used to be but wasn’t any more – and warned that the wardens are “very keen here”. Surely this is illegal and a form of entrapment. If the bay’s status has changed it is the council’s legal obligation to remove any contradictory signs, and indeed the white bay lines, immediately. Modern life is complex enough without this kind of irresponsibility demonstrated by the authorities.

A City of York Council spokeswoman said: “We would like to thank the person who highlighted the need to remove some double yellow lines that were now redundant.

“This work has now been completed and should prevent any future confusion over the parking arrangements here for which we apologise.”
