I AM writing as a disgruntled former resident, concerned about the future of the church which I have known all my life, and was christened in under the Rev David Watson, namely St Cuthbert’s, Peasholme Green.
While I appreciate that redundant churches have to be put to other uses, I find the desecration of the interior of the building scandalous and would be interested in the justification for such wanton vandalism.
Then I find out that, not content with ruining the inside of the church, they are now determined to desecrate the graveyard by felling the mature lime trees and a mature chestnut.
As a professional aborist working for the Isle of Man government, in my opinion this is not only an act of the most wanton vandalism, but a dereliction of duty by the officers of the city council and the church authorities, who are privileged enough to be the custodians of York’s heritage for future generations.
I would be interested to see the justifications for such actions.
