MICHAEL Vaughan kick-started his bid to reclaim his England Test spot in perfect fashion with a century to help defending champions Yorkshire to an opening win against Surrey in the Pro ARCH Trophy at Abu Dhabi.

The 34-year-old serenely made his way to 115 from 113 balls to help the White Rose county amass a more than useful 295-8 from their 50 overs, while opener Joe Sayers impressed with 55 from 78 balls.

Rich Pyrah sealed a 33-run victory with an outstanding 4-29 from his ten overs, although Michael Brown, Usman Afzaal and Stewart Walters (57) all hit half-centuries for Surrey in their 262-9.

Vaughan's ex-England colleague Graham Thorpe, who is now Surrey's batting coach, said: "It's the first time I've seen him bat for a while, and he looked exceptional.

"His balance looked good, he timed the ball sweetly as you'd expect. You need to get runs in pre-season and take form into the beginning of the English season."

Vaughan arrived at the crease in just the second over of the contest after Andrew Gale was caught behind for a duck off the bowling of Stuart Meaker.

It took him a while to get going, but once he did the cover boundary was peppered on his way to three figures for the first time for Yorkshire since an unbeaten 116 against Lancashire in the C&G Trophy quarter-final in June 2004.

Chris Jordan, who bowled Vaughan off a free hit, was Surrey's best bowler (1-38 from ten overs). Alex Tudor, however, claimed 3-55 from eight.

Left-handed Sayers, who will be unlikely to feature much in competitive one-day cricket over the coming months, was part of a second wicket stand of 126 with Vaughan.

Captain Anthony McGrath, who had earlier won the toss and elected to bat, was brilliantly run out by Matt Spriegel for 29. He and Vaughan shared 64 for the third wicket.

Just after the wicket of Sayers, Vaughan had hit Spriegel for six over straight mid-wicket. It was his only maximum, but he registered 12 fours.

Pace bowler Jordan finally gained redemption for his early discrepancy by dismissing Vaughan caught at deep square leg by Chris Schofield late in the 45th over. Tim Bresnan added a late 28 from 32 balls to boost the Tykes total, although it could have been more had they not lost four wickets in the last five overs.

Scott Newman (40) and Brown's 51 ensured Surrey got off to a flying start in their reply, but Steve Patterson, 2-46 from ten overs, and Pyrah helped Yorkshire drag back control from 101-1 in the 20th over.

Walters and Afzaal kept Surrey in the hunt, but their effort faded as Pyrah got rid of Brown, James Benning, Chris Schofield and Walters. Bresnan also picked up two late wickets.
