York pub boss struggles in wake of big chain’s price cuts and economic downturn

A LEASEHOLDER of a troubled York watering hole has blamed big chain pubs offering customers massive New Year’s reductions for pushing her out of business.

Jill Greaves, leaseholder of The Deramore Arms, in Heslington, and The Rose & Crown, in Lawrence Street, said she was facing a bleak 2009.

She blamed the economic downturn and the fact bigger companies were able to offer booze at vastly reduced prices.

Mrs Greaves said: “Leasehold pubs are going under because of these big chain pubs, such as Wetherspoon, who are pushing the smaller, privately run pubs out of business.”

There are two Wetherspoon pubs in York, the Punch Bowl at the top of Micklegate and the Postern Gate, in Piccadilly. Wetherspoon announced this week it was offering beer at 99p a pint and two meals for £5 and Mrs Greaves said it was impossible for her to compete.

“It would be cheaper for me to go down the road to the nearest Wetherspoon and buy my beer from there than through the brewery,” she said.

Mrs Greaves has already been forced to put the other pub she has been leasing, The Rose & Crown in Lawrence Street, on the market and is now worried about the future of The Deramore Arms.

She said: “The current climate means it is going to hit my pub in Heslington – especially on the drink side.”

She said there was general concern in York for the smaller local pubs being pushed out of business by the multinational chains. “It is annihilating people who are trying to run a pub, many leaseholders I know are being forced to sell up.”

She said something needed to be done before York lost its smaller, privately- run pubs.

“I think the Government should be stepping in and doing something before all these pubs start closing down,” she said.

However, a spokesman for Wetherspoon said the chain was trying to help out its customers during a difficult financial time.

“We’re just saying to our customers, ‘we know it’s tough out there and we want to help’,” he said. He added that the company was acting to benefit its customers – not other pubs. “If we had to stop and think about the effects all of our actions would have on others everytime we wanted to do something, we would never get anything done. Ultimately, everyone is in competition and it’s up to other publicans to decide how to compete.”

The spokesman said that the new low prices “shouldn’t stop you from going to a certain pub you enjoy for its local ale or traditional charm”.

OK Jill any suggestions as you are in the trade .

Are you trying to stop a free market which exists in the UK just so you can make a living.

If you take a pub in a student area common sense should tell you that they are not locals and will go for the cheapest food and beer.

Let me think £2.00 in the Deremore OR £1.00 in wetherspoons near the town and gallery night club.

Case dismissed !!!!!!!

Im sick of these glum faced landlords and landladys, moaning about how hard things are at the moment. If you are a decent pub with good food and a good pint, you will be ok. I had a Guiness in the Deramore about 2 weeks ago and it was appalling. No wonder noone goes there!

If you cannot compete on price then compete on service and surroundings.

I have eaten at both and if you want cheap then its Wetherspoons but if you want quality its The Deramore Arms.
Surely they can co-exist.

I had a few pints and a decent meal in there just before Christmas. You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. The Deramore is a lot better since it became independent again, after a long period when the brewery were selling poor quality food there. And the beer is ok too, I was on decent real ale and Leffe that day, nothing wrong with either.
Plus, aren't the Government supposed to be clamping down on selling alcohol at massively reduced prices on health grounds? So how do Wetherspoons get away with 99p a pint?

Anybody heard of the competition act its supposed to stop the likes of Wetherspoons and supermarkets from doing what they are doing but nothing ever gets done about it, Everybody knows leaseholders can,t compete with Wetherspoons on price but they can certainly compete on service and quality, the nearest I would ever get to a Wetherspoons is on my keyboard
When she bought the Rose & Crown last year she knew then she would have to compete with Wetherspoons so why did she bother, (maybe its because the Tam O Shanter has pinched a lot of her custom)

Couldn't agree more. I've had a couple of cracking, reasonably priced dinners in the Deramore. The staff are great, the food is high quality (don't even start me on the mayo art :D ) and the beer is good & averagely priced! I'm not on a retainer from Jill I promise, but I cannot recommend the place highly enough! Perhaps the Press can send their food bods down there for a review?

There is no secret that non-chain pubs are struggling at the moment but surely with Britain in a recession it makes sense that 'poor' students go to the Charles where food and beer is much cheaper.

However the Charles also truly gets the majority of the Heslington locals, and the Deremore's Guinness is poor.

This whole article is clearly just a petty way to get free advertising space in the local paper.

The woman's a joke.... And i'm laughing.

You say this as if it will be a welcome move - surely not. Not by me anyway! The government that does this will not ever get my vote again - and I don't drink.

Spoons only sell one beer at 99p, Greene King IPA ale.

I don't think its fair to attack wetherspoons for lowering prices, they've always been providing cheap booze.

Sam Smiths pubs are cheaper on the whole than spoons, but people don't seem to mind Sams because it's a local brewery.

I enjoy a pint in the Derry when the football's on, but I can see why it's not doing so well with the charles next door and it's out-of-town location. Always busy when I go in though.

The Rose on the other hand is often empty. There's plenty of pubs on Lawrence street, we're bound to lose a couple in this climate.

rose was a good pub before she took over, derry was always full on a weekend and matches on tv but pint of tets went up drastically when she took over.the name of the game is survival of the fittest so either put up or shut up.

The Derry is & has nearly always been a "Student" pub, certainly since the refit making two bars into one, the locals don't like it & left in droves, now they want the locals back, as students WILL only go to cheap lager/ beer pubs, they moan - IF it had resisted the change all those years ago & been a GOOD locals ALE pub, it would be in better shape to see out this critical year

I'm not sure that it is weatherspoons that are hurting the derry's trade. Most locals do not want to trek into town for a couple of pints every day. All pubs have had a steady down turn for the last couple of years. At the end of the day the derry could lower their prices considerably on both food and beer to try to bring the locals back in. This may still be too little too late.
